City Dean of Invercargill

City Dean of Invercargill

Diocese of Dunedin – Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia

Are you a visionary priest with a heart for collaborative ministry and a passion for pioneering outreach? The Bishop of Dunedin invites applications for the role of City Dean of Invercargill, a full-time stipendiary position beginning January 2027.

This is a unique opportunity to lead an initiative in which three vibrant parishes—Holy Trinity, St John’s, and All Saints’— have committed to a common venture. Each parish within the cluster is self-supporting, led by a mixture of lay and non-stipended priests. Together, however, they have chosen to invite a leader to work among them who will nurture existing ministries and explore new paths of mission. Their hope is that the City Dean will be given freedom from many of the usual responsibilities of vicars in order to explore new ways of outreach and ministry.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the parishes in discerning and developing outward-facing ministries.

• Support and coordinate ministry across the parishes, fostering collaboration and growth.

• Be part of the team who preside and preach in the parishes.

• Oversee and enable a collaborative approach to pastoral care through lay ministry teams.

• Work with the Diocesan Ministry Educator to help equip and teach lay ministers in the parishes.

• Engage with the wider Invercargill community and ecumenical networks.

We’re looking for someone who:

• Has a deep relationship with Jesus Christ and models a life of prayer and biblical commitment.

• Is a priest in good standing within the Anglican Communion and eligible for licensing in New Zealand.

• Values lay ministry and has strong interpersonal and leadership skills.

• Is flexible, innovative, and enthusiastic about trying new approaches.

• Enjoys connecting with youth and young people

• Respects Tikanga Māori and is open to using Te Reo in liturgical contexts.

• Has empathy for diverse cultures and a desire to engage with the wider community.

• Brings a sense of humour and humility to their ministry.

Terms

• Start Date: January 2027

• Type: Full-time stipendiary

• Initial Term: 3 years, with expectation of extension

• Location: Invercargill, Southland

• Clergy housing is available
